Greening of the National Parks

GEO has worked with the National Park Service since 1994 conducting environmental “Greening” charrettes that bring together park and community stakeholders to imagine their shared futures and create a roadmap to implement their vision.

GEO conducted the first national greening charrette, following The Greening of The White House, for the Grand Canyon National Park. Selected experts from multidisciplinary fields were brought to the Grand Canyon to work with park officials and local community members. Integrated sustainable design solutions were identified to support the development of a Grand Canyon master plan.

GEO worked on the local scale with other parks to develop and coordinate similar charrettes in parks including Yellowstone National Park and Denali. On the national scale, GEO assisted with the NPS development of a framework for Parks as models of sustainability who host and educate millions of international visitors annually. GEO continues to coordinate with the NPS.
